Abstract

This research paper deals with the beginning of the history of Arab poetry and its stages of development from the initial beginnings and then its development and crystallization of concepts and methods and tools to become what it is at present. The research highlights the definition of classical poetry, its renewal features, the most prominent figures of the period and their efforts, and the transformation of classical poetry into metered poetry. The research focuses as well on non-traditional poetic forms such as Al-Muwashahat, Al-Zajal and Free verse Poetry. The research paper shows the distinctive status occupied by poetry in the pre-Islamic times, and the status of poets within their tribes in that rich stage of Arabic poetry, and its place in the post-Islam period. Hassan ibn Thabit, poet of the Prophet, is an important poet during this period.  This is an important place for poets in the eras of the Islamic countries, such as the Umayyad and Abbasid, then the leading contemporary poets such as Ahmed Shawki and others. And then the subsequent change in the perception of the newly free verse and the emergence of new forms freer and more diverse. Then the research attempts to highlight the social and cultural causes of the emergence of these types and the integration of traditional poetic forms.
