Dynamics of the psychological structure in a sample of addicts with severe multiple addictions In-depth clinical study

Abstract

The purpose of the current research is to provide a picture of the psychological structure of the addict youth as a deviant phenomenon which has risks for the individual and society, and to reveal the attitude towards the father, the mother, the family unity, women, sexual relationships friends and relatives, employers, subordinates, work colleagues, in addition to attitude towards fear, sense of guilt, individual abilities, the past, the future and goals. The sample included of a number of multiple-substance addicts, and the highest of them in terms of severity of addiction, were selected as a clinical case study. The materials of the study were: the interview with guiding headlines, addiction severity index ASI, the sakas, thematic apperception test TAT, and the Rorschach test.
The results revealed the following findings: the addict has less ability to control his impulses, addiction for him could be a way of punishing himself or others, addiction could be a way to discharge the unconscious and aggressive impulses towards the self, the love-object or society in general, the addict is immature, has elevated levels in anxiety with reduction in self-esteem, the family background is characterized by ambivalence, identification with the mother, ambivalent feelings towards the father, sexual deviations, and finally the addict is unable to withstand frustration and make decisions.
