Abstract

The aim of this study, which is titled (The space of the city in the stories of Jarallah al-Hamid), is to address a contemporary Saudi writer. He is one of the pioneers of modern short story writing in Saudi Arabia. The author, Jarallah al-Hamid, was born in a village in Hail in 1954.He issued in his writing career four story collections between the years 1979 and 1998 (The sorrows of wild grass) in 1997, (many faces, the first of them is Maryam) in 1985, (The smell of cities) in 1997, Shadows of fugitive men) in 1998.These stories were collected as the writer's full works and published at the Hail Literary Club. Some of the reasons for the study are :
The absence of previous academic studies about this author and the title "The space and the city" has not been taken care of by critics.
The depth and poetic language that distinguishes Jarallah al-Hamid in his narrative writing, description, drawing characters, building time and events in stories can be considered the reason to select him. This gave him specificity in writing to distinguish him from others and made him unique in forming and imagine the place and make his relationship with the main narrative elements stronger. This was according to a descriptive approach derived from his analysis of modern narrative criticism. The study included the introduction, preface , two subjects and a conclusion includes the most important results of the study, but the preface was about Jarallah al-Hamid' experience in writing stories, his interest in the place/city and the concept of the term " space " for critics . The title of the first subject was " Description of the city " and the title of the second subject was " The city and forming and image the space."
