The Relationship between Self-esteem and psychological happiness among University students Empirical study in the light of gender differences

Abstract

The study aimed at finding out the quality and the impact of self-esteem and gender on the dimensions of psychological wellbeing: Autonomy, Environmental Mesentery, Personal Growth, Positive Relations with other, Purpose In Life and Self Acceptance. The sample consisted of 520 students(260 males, 260 females),every group is divided to a group of high self-esteem, and another half had low self-esteem. Self-Esteem Manual (2004) and psychological wellbeing Scale (2006) were applied. The results indicated the significant impact of selfesteem on all the dimensions of the six psychological wellbeing, and the gender had an positive impact on both dimensions: Autonomy, Personal Growth, Positive Relations with other and the Purpose In life, while the results did not show gender influence in both Environmental Mesentery and self-acceptance. There was no statistically significant interaction between self-esteem and gender on the dimension of psychological wellbeing as a whole.The results were disscused in the light of literature available.
