Abstract

This research aims to identify how Egyptian ministries employ Facebook to disseminate awareness programs on climate change issues. The study relies on content analysis to examine materials published on the official Facebook pages of several Egyptian ministries, namely, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Local Development (, during the period from January 2025 to June 2025. These pages have been selected based on an exploratory study conducted by asking a group of Facebook users about the ministries they most follow for climate-related issues. The study has adopted concepts derived from the Media Richness Theory as its theoretical framework. The results revealed that the pages of the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Local Development benefited from the communicative potential offered by Facebook as a platform for interaction and engagement with the public, allowing opportunities for dialogue, feedback, and proposals regarding ministry activities and public attitudes toward them. The findings also indicated that most of the public awareness messages on climate change issues have relied more on implicit approaches rather than explicit statements, through showcasing achievements in rationalizing consumption, protecting the environment, recycling products, and similar initiatives, mainly, using logical and rational appeals. However, the study shows that the awareness role regarding climate change issues has been more limited on the pages of the Ministry of Planning and the Ministry of Local Development, compared with the stronger role observed in the Ministry of Environment.
