Abstract

Development is fundamentally grounded in the principle of equality between men and women, where equal opportunities for education and personal growth must be ensured for both. Such equality is essential for achieving women’s social and economic empowerment, as gender equality constitutes an integral component of sustainable development. Existing reports highlight the persistence of a digital divide between men and women, particularly in terms of access to and awareness of various digital resources. This study seeks to examine the social dimensions of the gender digital divide by identifying the contributing factors to this gap, exploring differences in technological skill levels between men and women, and analyzing the manifestations of the digital divide. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology and is based on a questionnaire administered to a non-probability convenience sample of 402 respondents (both men and women) from Greater Cairo governorates. The findings indicate a slight gender gap in access to digital resources and internet usage; however, the divide becomes more evident when considering digital skills. Although both men and women generally demonstrate low levels of advanced digital skills, the gap is slightly wider among women in this domain.
