The Impact of Urban Poverty on Intergenerational Social Mobility: a Field Study on a Sample of Poor Migrants to New Assiut City

Abstract

The general objective of the current study is to examine the impact of urban poverty on the social mobility opportunities of the sons of urban poor migrants in New Assiut City. this study relied on a descriptive analytical method and social survey method and using a questionnaire to collect data from the research sample. The study was conducted on a purposive sample of (115) individuals from the population of New Assiut City.                                                                                                                               The findings of the study revealed a natural and moderate age gap between the generation of the research sample and that of their parents.   It was also found that there are differences between the generation of the research sample and that of their parents in terms of educational level, occupational status, household income, number of children in the family, residential area, housing size, and ownership  .The results also showed that most of the sample members were satisfied with their housing and neighborhood in New Assiut City. In addition, the majority were keen on continuous learning and self-education and were committed to ensuring the education of all their children   .   The results revealed that most members of the research sample do not receive assistance from social solidarity institutions, whereas most poor parents in their families of origin receive financial aid from such institutions . The results also revealed that the majority of the research sample were keen to build social networks with others, particularly kinship and family ties, more than with any other type of social relationship. The results also showed that most members of the research sample were keen on voluntary participation, particularly through involvement in civil society associations and conveying housing-area complaints to the relevant authorities in the city. They were also keen on political participation, especially by voting in elections, followed by attending seminars and taking part in publicity campaigns for elected members  .                                                                                                                                              
Finally, the results showed that most members of the research sample were keen to plan for the future of their families and children, particularly by saving part of their monthly income in a post office or bank account to ensure family security.
