Abstract

This research paper addresses lying as a linguistic phenomenon from a pragmatic perspective, through the analysis of the story "Mazloom" by the writer Yusuf Idris. In this story, lying is considered a linguistic tool used in complex social contexts, carrying multiple psychological and cultural dimensions. The paper focuses on analyzing the dialogues between the characters to examine how lying is employed as a means of communication and interaction. The primary objective of the research is to understand the mechanism of using lying as a linguistic tool in the literary text and how this usage reflects the interaction between characters within their social and psychological contexts.
Therefore, the research examines the application of Grice's cooperative principle and how it is violated through the use of lying in the dialogue between the protagonists. Additionally, the study reviews the various linguistic mechanisms used to produce lies, taking into account the social and cultural context surrounding the characters. The pragmatic approach adopted in this paper links the linguistic act to the social and psychological reality of the characters, thus providing a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of lying.
