Abstract

The current study aimed to verify the effectiveness of a training program based on mindfulness and its impact on developing both self-control and working memory in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study sample consisted of (22) children suffering from ADHD, aged between (7-9) with an arithmetic mean of (7.88) and a standard deviation of (0.781), distributed into two groups: an experimental group participating in the training program {n=(11) 7 males and 4 females} and a control group {n=(11) 7 males and 4 females}. The tools included the mindfulness scale, the self-control scale (prepared by the researcher), and the working memory scale included in the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, fifth edition, translated and standardized by Abdel Mawgoud Abdel Samee, Mohamed Taha, and Mahmoud Abu El-Nil (2011). Gilliam Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Scale, translated and standardized by Abdel Raqib Al-Buhairi (2017), was used as a criterion for diagnosing ADHD. The study tools also included a mindfulness-based training program (prepared by the researcher). The study results revealed statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-tests in mindfulness, self-control, and working memory for the experimental sample, in favor of the post-test. The results also showed statistically significant differences between the experimental group and the control group in the post-tests of mindfulness, self-control, and working memory, in favor of the experimental sample. This reinforces the effectiveness of the mindfulness-based training program and its impact on developing both self-control and working memory. The study concluded with recommendations for caring for children with ADHD and developing appropriate training programs to reduce the exacerbation of the primary or accompanying symptoms of the disorder and prevent their continuation into adolescence.
