Abstract

“I, Pet Goat II” is a Canadian animated short film produced in 2012 by an animation studio based in Montreal. The title of the film is inspired by the storybook that George W. Bush was reading to students in an American school when he was told of the attack on the two towers of the World Trade Center in 2001. The film contains no dialogue however it offers a large dose of metaphorical messages political and religious. They offer strong implications to the events which followed the spectacular attacks of 9/11 and which marked the beginning of the 3rd millennium. Events such as the war against terrorism, the conflict of the great powers, the decline of Europe, the massive destruction of humanity... are displayed in the form of images one after the other attesting to the accuracy of the conspiracy theory. Was the image, on its own, capable of transmitting messages that are meant to be delivered through the production of this short silent film? The present research is an attempt to answer this question. We carried out a semiological analysis of this animation based on the approach proposed by Roland Barthes in his study “Rhetoric of the Image”.
