Abstract

Three basic goals are at the top of the objectives of the current study: identifying the role of digital transformation in building the capabilities of youth, highlighting how building those capabilities helps them achieve their hopes and ambitions, and revealing the risks and challenges facing youth in this regard, in the era of digital transformation, and how to confront them.
The study relied on two theoretical approaches: Castells' network society theory and Amartya Sen's ability perspective. It also relied on the sample social survey method, and the questionnaire tool. The field study was conducted on students and graduates of Alexandria University, and it reached a number of important results, including: The strengths of the digital transformation process lie in that it can build the capabilities of Egyptian youth, improve their job and professional performance, help them achieve their dreams and ambitions, and obtain a suitable job with a salary. It is rewarding, and in order for this to be achieved, there must be some fundamental basic requirements, which are surrounded of course by some risks and challenges accompanying this process, such as: the lack of the necessary basic infrastructure, and the lack of a comprehensive strategic vision among state institutions and the private sector to keep pace with this process. The study also found that building the capabilities of youth helps them achieve their hopes and ambitions, but some challenges stand in their way, including a clear gap between the skills they acquire and the requirements of the labor market, and the lack of job opportunities available to youth with limited or average technical skills. The study proposed recommendations, including the need for concerted efforts of the state, the private sector and civil society in order to develop a clear strategy for digital transformation, and the need to provide education and training opportunities to build the capabilities of youth and benefit from their skills and creativity.
