The culture of disability and the role of anthropology in understanding and studying disability diseases

Abstract

Anthropological and social studies have given great attention to studying various diseases and disabilities. Many anthropological studies have clarified the importance of cultural factors associated with the occurrence of disease, and cultural and social aspects have a fundamental role in treating various diseases and disabilities, and they also have a role in acceptance of people with disabilities. Anthropologists have strong contributions to the field of studying diseases and disabilities, as they provide us with a deeper understanding of disability as a complex, multipolar phenomenon that carries multiple social, cultural, medical, and economic dimensions .
Since anthropology is concerned with studying the human being from all his aspects, the disabled person is primarily a human being, who has his place in society, a role to play, rights and obligations, Hence, this study aimed to identify The importance of paying attention to disability and the issues of individuals with disabilities, the role of anthropology in the field of studying various diseases and disabilities, and the prevailing cultural beliefs about the category of disabled people. Accordingly, the study relied on the socioanthropological approach, the descriptive analytical approach, cognitive theory, and role theory.
The study concluded that anthropology can understanding the experiences of people with disabilities by studying cultural beliefs and practices related to disability, analyzing how disability affects the lives of people in various social contexts, and that anthropology can It helps improve the quality of life of people with disabilities and fight the social stigma associated with disability.
