Abstract

The study presented ways to achieve legitimation in the Egyptian media discourse on the Covid pandemic through the four rhetorical means identified by Van Leeuwen; The research first studied: authority: personal and impersonal authorization, then evaluation, and it benefited from what was stated by Martin and White and what Ryse mentioned in his study, so it examined legitimation through emotion, appreciation, and judgment. The research then studied rationalization through means of just rationalization, theoretical rationalization, and finally myths, and linked the axes of legitimation and the ways of formulating them linguistically to explain the relationship between language and authority, and to show how the discourse, with its linguistic tools and rhetorical means, came to confront the pandemic. The combination of all these elements reflects the seriousness of the pandemic and the discourse’s response to it through its multiple mechanisms and methods. This is to legitimize all decisions, directives and warnings issued to combat the virus.
