The Semiotics of Punctuation in Theatrical Discourse: The Play “Muḥammaun, Arrasūlul-Bašar” by Tawfiq Al-Hakim as an example

Abstract

This research studies punctuation marks in the biography of the Prophet written by Tawfiq Al-Hakim (1898-1987 AD) as non-linguistic signs with semantic functions, a pragmatic semiotic study. To demonstrate its semantic role in that theatrical discourse that cannot be played on stage. the biography written by Al-Hakim has a unprecedented dialogue form.
The aim of the study: to clear the semantic functions of punctuation marks in theatrical discourse, by studying the punctuation marks used in the play “Muḥammaun, Arrasūlul-Bašar” as non-verbal signs that contributed to form this discourse through its connotations and functions.
Study Methodology: The study takes Peirce's semiotics, which studies the sign and its indications, as a theoretical frame for studying punctuation marks as visual icons and significant semiotic signs.
Sections of the study: The study is divided into two parts: A theoretical section deals with semiotics, the history of punctuation marks in Arabic, and Tawfiq Al-Hakim’s life and writing of the Prophet’s biography.
An applied section studies the punctuation marks in the play under study, and analyzes them in the context of their use, indicating their semantic functions.
