Employing the Traditional Character in the Dramatic Text: Analytical Study

Abstract

Abstract:
The study examines the use of the traditional character as a speaker who evokes through his dialogic utterance the conditions of his era, its values, and its intellectual and cultural foundations. The study has chosen three short plays, each of which represents a distinctive pattern in the use of the traditional character into the dramatic text.
The importance of the study lies in its focus on this popular literary art, and its treatment of the phenomenon of employing the traditional character.
The study adopted the Analytical approach, which seeks to explore the manifestations of the historical employment of the character in the dramatic text, and the different artistic qualities with which this employment was made, while linking it to the neighboring elements of drama.
The study included an introductory, and three sections; namely: (Images of the employment of the traditional character - Dimensions of the traditional character and its elements and structure - Character patterns). Finally came the conclusion that included the most important results of the study and its recommendations.
The study has reached several results, including: Al-Asir (The Captive) was the richest and most committed of the three plays to drama; in terms of the multiplicity of characters, the text, changing the decor of the theatre, in addition to the dramatic plot and the use of dialogue to contribute to the building of characters and their growth.
