Abstract

Fe Mamar Al Fe’ran (In Rats Lane) is a fictional narrative aimed at criticizing sociopolitical reality. Through this fictional/fantasied embodiment, the writer seeks to change reality in any possible form. However, this is impossible because of the injustice of oppressors and the silence of the oppressed .
The motive behind writing Fe Mamar Al Fe’ran is Ahmed Khaled Tawfik’s fear that Egypt will turn into several divided cities one day; some of which are wealthy living in lightness, and others are poor living in darkness.
The novel leans on cognitive interference, which is considered, in turn, the origin in the history of human knowledge. There is no room out of the narrowness of specialization, its sanctity and locked intellectual fortresses except through cognitive interference via a network of communicative systems across different types of knowledge.
This study aims to manifest the cognitive dimensions in the novel Fe Mamar Al Fe’ran in which the writer portrays the aspects of dystopia in a world cloaked by darkness. The study attempts to answer this question: What are the cognitive dimensions in the novel Fe Mamar Al Fe’ran? To answer this question, an approach leaning on some of the concepts of semiotics is adopted
