Examining and Post-Editing ChatGPT’s Translation of Arabic Archaic Words Extracted from the Egyptian Folk Tale: Ali Al-Zeybak

Archaic words are considered a phenomenon that exists in any language; translating these words could be problematic because they are outdated; this raises the question about the ability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) model ChatGPT to appropriately translate such words. The current study examines the efficiency of ChatGPT of translating some selected problematic archaic words in one of the novels of the famous Egyptian folk tales: Ali Al- Zeybak, which was written by Farouk Khorshed; it deals with events that happened during Mamluk era. Moreover, the study adopts Newmark’s translation procedures in examining the procedures used by ChatGPT in providing the translation of the selected archaic words. In addition, a post-editing process is applied depending on different specialized historical Arabic dictionaries and other historical references to recognize the appropriate translation of the selected words. The study aspires to help the databases of AI models recognize the proper meaning of some archaic words of the selected folk tale. The results of this study may not only help translators and editors but also help AI platforms improve the translation of such archaic words.
