        يعنى هذا البحث بدراسة المعاني النفسية التي ظهرت عند أبي تمام والبحتري في إطار خروج الأول عن عمود الشعر المتبع، وتمسک الآخر به، وهو ما تفصح عنه نصوصهما الشعرية التي وظف فيها فن المبالغة عن بعض المشاعر السلبية التي کانت نتيجة حتمية (لشعور الشاعرين بعقدة النقص أوالدونية)، والمترتب عليها لجوء الشخص إلى آلية معينة للدفاع عن نفسه المنطوية على إحساس الإهانة والذل، وأنه أقل ممن حوله في بعض الأمور، لتبقى هذه العقدة مترسخة في سلوکية الفرد، وتصاحبه لتظهر نتائجها التعويضية المقابلة لها، والمتمثلة في بذل مجهودات خاصة لإخفاء مشاعر النقص، من محاولته إثبات تفوقه، أو تميزه وغيرها من المظاهر التعويضية التي تحقق له شعور الاکتفاء الذاتي.
